IITs

In a transformative move, five prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) — Ropar, Guwahati, Mandi, Patna, and Kanpur — have ushered in a paradigm shift by extending their academic embrace to students hailing from Tier-2 and Tier-3 town colleges. Traditionally perceived as the exclusive domain of elite institutions, IITs are now poised to welcome a broader spectrum of talent.

An Inclusive Approach to Education: Collaboration with NSDC

For the academic year 2024-25, a pioneering initiative has been unveiled, enabling students from Tier-2 and Tier-3 town colleges to acquire the coveted IIT tag. This novel opportunity comes in the form of a partnership between the IITs and the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC). As per information shared by NSDC CEO Ved Mani Tiwari, students can opt for a minor specialization, diploma, bachelor’s, or master’s degree, all facilitated through collaboration with NSDC.

Skill Development Integration: A Credit-Based System

The courses offered under this collaboration will be structured on a credit-based system. For instance, a minor specialization from an IIT will involve the completion of 10 to 18 credits. The core degree, awarded by the affiliating university, will bear the distinction of the minor specialization from the prestigious IIT, thereby enhancing the overall academic profile of the student.

In a typical four-year undergraduate degree program, a total of 160 credits are required to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from an IIT. Out of these, 18 credits will be dedicated to the skill component, which will be delivered through the Skill India Digital platform.

Diversified Learning Paths: Multiple Entry and Exit Options

Aligning with the provisions of the National Education Policy (NEP), the programs are designed with flexibility in mind, offering multiple entry and exit options. Students enrolling in a four-year online undergraduate program can choose to exit with a Foundational Certificate after the first year, a Diploma in the second year, a Bachelor’s Degree in the third year, and an Honors Degree in the fourth year.

Similarly, for the two-year executive MTech program, students completing a 12-month PG Diploma can extend their course to obtain a master’s degree from the IIT after PG Diploma completion. Additionally, candidates have the option to exit after the first semester of the PG Diploma and receive a PG certification.

Tripartite Collaborations: Bridging Academic and Skill-Based Learning

To illustrate the implementation of this groundbreaking initiative, a tripartite partnership between IIT-Patna, NSDC, and Teamlease has been forged. This collaboration has resulted in the creation of a three-year degree program — Bachelor of Computer Application (BCA). This 155-credit program involves 146 academic credits provided by IIT-Patna, with the remaining nine credits covered through skill-based programs offered in collaboration between NSDC and Teamlease.

Unlocking Access through Online Education

Since these courses are delivered in an online mode, there are no limitations on admission intake. However, admission is contingent upon successfully clearing an online entrance examination. This removal of geographical barriers and the adoption of online education represent a significant leap toward democratizing access to quality education.

Emphasizing Practical Skill Development: A New Era for IITs

The inclusion of short-term skilling programs through Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas schemes and the provision for Industrial Training Institute (ITI) students to pursue certificate or diploma programs from IITs showcases a pragmatic approach. This emphasis on practical skill development aligns with the evolving needs of the job market and reflects the IITs’ commitment to producing well-rounded graduates.

Conclusion

The decision of IITs to open their doors to students from Tier-2 and Tier-3 town colleges marks a historic shift in the landscape of higher education in India. This inclusive approach, coupled with flexible learning pathways and a focus on practical skill development, signifies a commitment to nurturing a diverse pool of talent. The collaboration between IITs and NSDC not only bridges the gap between academic and skill-based learning but also sets a precedent for other institutions to embrace inclusivity and innovation in education. As the IITs redefine their role in the educational ecosystem, they are not just institutions of excellence but catalysts for positive change and equal opportunities.
