JEE Main is an online examination for admission into the best engineering colleges of the country and also acts as a qualifying exam for JEE Advanced. It is conducted twice a year by NTA from 2019 onwards. The aspirants can opt to appear for both the sessions and the better of the two NTA scores would be used to prepare the merit list. Around 2.4 lakhs of students qualified for JEE Advanced which is an entrance examination for the prestigious IITs.

JEE MAIN 2020 Pattern:

JEE MAIN comprises two papers: Paper 1 which is for students aspiring a B.Tech degree and Paper 2 for the aspirants of planning and architecture. The candidate can opt to choose either one or both of the papers. The paper 1 is completely a computer based test while paper 2 is partly online.

The Paper 1 of JEE Main comprises three sections: Physics, Chemistry and Math. Each section consists of 25 questions and 100 marks.

Each section is further divided into two parts having 20 multiple choice questions and 5 numerical based questions.The marks allotted to each question is 4 and there is negative marking only in multiple choice questions. A penalty of 1 mark would be deducted for wrongly marked answers in MCQ while no marks would be deducted for wrongly answered numerical based questions.

The total duration of the exam is 3 hours. However, for persons with a disability of more than 40 percent, the time provided is 4 hours. JEE Main is available in Hindi and English language and also in Gujarati for students of Gujarat, Daman & Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

The Paper 2 of JEE Main is for students aspiring for B. Plan and B. Arch degrees from prestigious colleges. It is in completely online mode for B.Plan students and partially online for B.Arch students. Below is given the exam pattern for both:

Key Highlights of Paper 2:

  1. Mathematics section is divided into two parts with 20 objective questions and  numerical based questions.
  2. All the questions are of 4 marks each except the Drawing section in which 2 questions carry 100 marks.
  3. There is a negative marking of 1 mark for wrongly marked answers in objective questions only.
  4. Marking more than one option would be considered as an incorrect response.

Eligibility Criteria for JEE Main:

  1. The candidates who are wishing to appear JEE Main 2021 should have passed class 12th or qualifying examination in either 2019, 2020 or must be appearing in 2021.
  2. There is no age limit for JEE Main, however students must take care of the age limit criteria of the institute they are taking admission into
  3. The following are the qualifying subjects that student should have passed in their class 12th or qualifying exam:
  4. For B.E. / B.Tech students: Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects and one of Biology, Chemistry, Biotechnology or technical vocational subject.
  5. For B. Arch students: Mathematics, Physics & Chemistry
  6. For B. Planning students: Mathematics
