It was announced by the Central Government on 29th July 2021 that there will be a reservation under All Quota India schemes for undergraduate and Post Graduate Medical and dental courses from this year onwards. Now learners from different economically weaker sections will find it stress-free to get education in any medical college of their choice across India.

27% of the reservation is for Other Backward Classes (OBC) and 10% is for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS). The scheme involves 15% of the total vacant undergraduate seats and 50% of all postgraduate seats in government medical colleges. This will apply to courses like BDS, MBBS, MS, MD, MDS and diploma medical programs.

Around Fifteen hundred OBC students in UG and Twenty fife hundred OBC students in PG will benefit from this scheme every year. This will also benefit around Five fifty students from economically weaker section (EWS) in MBBS and around one thousand EWS students in post-graduation. This new change shows government’s pledge to provide due reservation for backward and EWS category students.

In 2007, the same reservations were added to All India Quota for SCs with 15% reservation for SCs and 7.5% for STs in that year. Now the same scheme has been extended to the OBCs and EWS. Now OBC & EWS students from all over the country can take the benefit of this new reservation scheme to compete for the seats in any state of the country.

Here’s what Prime Minister Narendra Modi has to say:

From 2020, the country has increased MBBS seats by 56% to 84,649 and the number of postgraduate seats has increased by 80% to 54,275 seats. In the period of six years 179 new medical colleges have been established. Now the country has 558 medical colleges, in which 269 are private colleges. All of this was in sync with the substantial transformations carried out in the field of medical education since 2014.

A historic decision has been taken by the government in the field of medical education in the country which is going to help thousands of students to get better quality education and will help in building social justice in the country.
