Chemistry is considered as one of the most scoring sections of JEE Main by students aspiring to crack the examination. During any stage of preparation for such prestigious examinations, one question that always comes up in the mind of aspirants is what are the most important chapters of the subject. This information helps in formulating a right strategy of revision and preparation. To help the students, we are providing names of important chapters based on the past trends of questions in the examination. For the ease of convenience, this information would be divided into three parts namely: Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry.

Physical Chemistry is slightly more weighted over organic and inorganic chemistry as per the recent observations. Going into chapters, Chemical Bonding, Atomic Structure, P-Block elements,  Electrochemistry are some of the highly weighted chapters. Apart from this, there are also topics which have a surprising element as they have not shown consistent appearance in the exam but whenever they make a presence they show a good number of questions. Such chapters include Ionic Equilibrium, Transition Elements and Coordination Chemistry, Aromatic Compounds. Students can not afford to miss out on these chapters.

While the rest of the chapters do not show bigger differences in any year and have appeared in numbers of 1-2 every year. Below is the classification of chapters on the basis of their weightage:

High WeightageMedium WeightageLow Weightage
Chemical BondingSolution & Colligative PropertiesEnvironmental Chemistry
Chemical & Ionic EquilibriumSolid StatesStereochemistry
Coordination CompoundQualitative AnalysisHydrogen & its Compound

P-Block ElementsSurface Chemistry
Aromatic CompoundsAmines
General Organic ChemistryCarboxylic Acid & Their Derivatives
HydrocarbonsAlcohol & Ethers
 Alkyl Halides
 Practical Organic Chemistry

However, students must note that despite the similarity of the JEE Main and JEE Advanced syllabus there are certain chapters which are extremely important for JEE Advanced but are not given due weightage in JEE Main. So, for a blended preparation strategy students should also look at the important chapters for JEE Advanced.

Some tips on how to prepare for the Chemistry section for JEE Main:

Physical Chemistry: Students are recommended to prepare a small formula notebook for quick revision of formulas. This would save their time of referring to books and also in memorising them. Also, remember values of various logarithmic values which are useful in Ionic Equilibrium chapters.

Organic Chemistry: The key to success in organic chemistry is to understand the reaction mechanisms. Students should learn by heart the reactions which have some name associated with it. They should be able to identify the nature of reagents and stability of the formed products. Lastly, they must learn by-heart the tests by various organic reagents.

Inorganic Chemistry: This part of chemistry is mostly about learning the concepts and memorising them where required. Short Notes should be prepared for topics like Chemical Bonding, coordination compound, metallurgy for a quick glimpse to keep the touch of a topic at any later stage. Consistent revision is the key to master inorganic chemistry.
