JEE Advanced is considered to be one of the toughest exams in the country which is conducted for admission into the prestigious IITs. It is conducted by one of the 7 zonal IITs under the guidance of Joint Admission Board every year. Only students who have qualified the JEE Main are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced. Students aspiring to get admission into these institutes must be well aware of the pattern of exam to prepare the right strategy to attempt the questions.

JEE Advanced consists of two papers of 3 hour duration each. It does not have a fixed pattern like JEE Main and could be changed. However, seeing the past question papers, we are aware about the kind of questions asked in JEE Advanced which are: single correct answer type questions, multiple correct answer type questions, numerical based questions, list-match type. The marking scheme for these various types of questions are different. To know more about this, the paper pattern of JEE Advanced 2020 is discussed below.

JEE Advanced Paper 1:

The paper 1 of JEE Advanced 2020 had three sections under each subject. The first section of each subject consisted of 4 single correct answer type questions having 3 marks for correct answers and -1 for incorrect answers. The second section had 8 more than one correct answer type questions. A maximum of 4 marks was allotted to each question and it also had partial marking in following manner:

+3 – If all the four options are correct but only three options are chosen

+2 – If three or more options are correct but only two options are chosen, both of which are correct options.

+1 – If two or more options are correct but only one option is chosen and it is a correct option.

These questions had -1 negative marking for any other combination.

The third section had six numerical value answer type questions of 3 marks each without any penalty for wrong answers.

This makes a total of 54 questions in Paper 1 to be attempted in 3 hours with a total of 186marks.

JEE Advanced Paper 2

The paper 2 of JEE Advanced 2020 also had three sections under each subject. The first section had 8 “more than one correct answer” type questions.

The second section had six “numerical value answer” type questions of 3 marks each without any penalty for wrong answers. The third section had 2 “list match sets consisting of 2 multiple choices” where 3 marks were awarded for correct combination of answers and 1 mark deducted for incorrect combination.

This makes a total of  48 questions (including multiple choice questions under list match) to be answered in 3 hours. The total marks of Paper 2 is also 186

This is a complete paper pattern of JEE Advanced 2020 and students should practice such kinds of questions to be exam ready. JEE Advanced 2020 had a maximum marks of 372 with 102 questions in both papers.
