NCERT deletions will not affect CUET in 2023

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is a body responsible for the development of school textbooks in India. As part of its syllabus rationalization exercise, the NCERT consulted 25 external experts and 16 CBSE teachers to review and update the content of its textbooks.

In June 2022, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) made public a list of changes and deletions in the reprinted textbooks that came into the market recently. The NCERT has removed content about Mahatma Gandhi, his assassin, and the banning of Rastriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) following Gandhi’s assassination from its new textbook editions for the current academic year for class 12 political science and history. However, Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh confirmed that the NCERT deletions would not affect the syllabus for the Central Universities Common Entrance Test (CUET) in 2023, and the changes will be effective from the 2023-24 academic session. The ministry has stated that the rationalization exercise aims to update and modernize the curriculum and eliminate outdated and irrelevant content from the textbooks.

The exam is based on the NCERT syllabus, which is the standard syllabus for school education in India. The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Delhi (DU) has stated that the changes made by the NCERT in its textbooks will not be applicable for the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) 2023.The Vice-Chancellor has clarified that the syllabus for CUET 2023 has already been finalized and the examination will be based on the existing syllabus. Therefore, the deletions made by the NCERT in its textbooks will not be reflected in the CUET 2023 exam.

A Common University Entrance Exam is an examination that is used as a standardized measure of a student’s ability to gain admission into various universities or colleges. It is designed to provide a level playing field for all students, regardless of their educational background or the school they attended. The exam is usually taken at a national level, and the scores obtained are used by multiple universities and colleges as a basis for admission. This eliminates the need for students to take multiple entrance exams for different universities or colleges, thus saving time and money. A common university entrance exam typically covers subjects like mathematics, science, language, and social studies, and assesses a student’s reasoning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. It is often offered in multiple languages to accommodate the linguistic diversity of the student population.

According to the DU VC, this year’s CUET exams have received more than 25 lakh applications due to the delayed semester last year. However, the exam will only be conducted once this academic year, from May 21 to 31, 2023.

The VC also stated that the CUET exam will not be conducted twice this year due to certain constraints. However, he expects that the University Grants Commission (UGC) will conduct the CUET exam through the National Testing Agency (NTA) once before the Class 12 examinations and once after the Class 12 exams from the next academic year.It is important to note that the decision to conduct the CUET exam twice a year will depend on various factors, including the availability of resources, logistics, and the academic calendar.
