Difference between JEE Mains and JEE Advanced
JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) for undergraduate engineering programs
like B.Tech, B.E, B.Arch, B.Plan in IITs, NITs, IIITs, other government
institutes, has been conducted in the form of JEE Main and JEE Advanced.
JEE Main is managed by the NTA where JEE Advanced is regulated by the IITs
on a rotation basis. JEE Main is also the eligibility test which allows
the students to appear for the JEE Advanced exam. JEE Mains also has Paper
2 and Paper 3, which are for B Arch, B Planning curses etc.
Difference between JEE Mains and JEE Advanced
There are various differences between JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Some of
the basic differences are as below:
Difficulty level:
JEE Main is tests your understanding, speed and accuracy but also has a
few formular based questions and most questions have only 1 or 2 concepts
involved; whereas JEE Advanced requires in-depth understanding of concepts
and most questions involve 3 or more concepts. JEE Advanced is therefore
tougher than JEE Mains as the questions in JEE Advanced are of a higher
level and involve a deeper knowledge of concepts and concentration. JEE
Advanced paper will test each and every concept which you learn in
Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
Types of Questions:
JEE Main consists of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and numerical
value-based questions, whereas JEE Advanced includes MCQs, numerical
value-based questions, and integer type questions. In some sections of JEE
Advanced, the questions have more than one option correct, but in JEE
Mains only one option is correct in each question.

Number of Questions:
JEE Main consists of 75 questions, 25 each from Physics, Chemistry, and
Mathematics to be attempted out of 30 questions available in each section.
JEE Advanced has two papers with a total of 54 questions, 18 each from
Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
Syllabus coverage
While the syllabus of JEE Main covers the CBSE syllabus of classes 11 and
12, JEE Advanced includes a few additional topics and goes beyond the CBSE
syllabus.

Number of Attempts

The maximum number of attempts each student can make for JEE Main and
JEE Advanced is different. -
Candidates can appear for JEE Main thrice. Attempting the two sessions
of the same year is counted as one. So you can appear in the year when
you are finishing class 12th and then you can appear for two more years
if you want. -
On the other hand, candidates can appear for JEE Advanced only twice in
consecutive years. So you can appear in the year when you are finishing
class 12th and then you can appear in the next year only.
In summary, JEE Advanced is a much more challenging exam with more
difficult questions, a different question paper pattern and more complex
marking scheme compared to JEE Main. The ideal way of preparing for both
JEE Main and JEE Advanced is to just focus on practicing the questions of
each chapter after you have gone through the concepts. You should ideally
aim at practicing at least 300 questions from each chapter of the
syllabus. Then you would be able to apply your knowledge and problem
solving skills in the JEE Mains or JEE Advanced exam in the best possible
manner.
