The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has recently announced that you can get admission in Engineering colleges even if you didn’t have Physics & Mathematics at class 12th level.

Now students having any of three subjects as enlisted by AICTE can seek admission to BE, BTech courses. The listed courses include – physics, mathematics, chemistry, computer science, electronics, information technology, biology, informatics practices, biotechnology, technical vocational subject, agriculture, engineering graphics, business studies, entrepreneurship.

It could be seen as a happy move in terms of bringing students from diverse backgrounds into engineering. At the same time, experts believe that mathematics and physics are crucial for any engineering degree and people not having good knowledge of these subjects may not turn into good engineers.

Students will have to participate in bridge courses to have a strong foundation so that they don’t lag behind during engineering. “The universities will offer suitable bridge courses such as mathematics, physics, engineering drawing for students coming from diverse backgrounds to achieve learning outcomes of the programme,” the AICTE said in its handbook.

Students should have obtained at least 45 per cent marks (40 per cent marks in case of candidates belonging to reserved category) in these subjects to be eligible for admission, as per rules.
