Class 10 and 12 Board Exam Assessment Procedures Are Revised by CBSE

NEP stands for National Education Policy, which is a comprehensive framework that outlines the vision and direction for the development of the education system in India. It was recently updated in 2020 after a gap of 34 years. The policy aims to transform the education system to make it more inclusive, equitable, and relevant to the needs of the 21st century. The policy aims to transform the education system to make it more inclusive, equitable, and relevant to the needs of the 21st century.

Mathematics 041 is a subject code used by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) for Class 10 and Class 12 board exams. It refers to the Basic Mathematics subject, which is an alternative to the Standard Mathematics subject. Standard Mathematics is the more advanced level of Mathematics, which covers a wide range of topics such as Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, and Statistics, among others. This subject is intended for students who have a keen interest in Mathematics and wish to pursue further studies in the subject.

On the other hand, Basic Mathematics is designed to provide students with a foundational understanding of mathematical concepts. It covers topics such as Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Statistics, but at a simpler level. This subject is intended for students who do not wish to pursue Mathematics as a major subject in higher education or for those who do not require advanced mathematical skills in their future career.

As per the news, CBSE has approved the inclusion of Mathematics 041 subject in Class 11 for those students who studied Basic Mathematics in Class 10. This decision was taken to provide students with an option to continue studying Mathematics in Class 11 and 12 despite studying Basic Mathematics in Class 10. This will enable the students to take up various professional courses that require Mathematics as a subject. However, it is important to note that this decision is applicable only to those students who have studied Basic Mathematics in Class 10 and not for those who have studied Standard Mathematics.

According to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020’s recommendations, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has in fact updated its evaluation procedures for the academic year 2023–2024. The board has increased the number of competency-based questions that it uses to evaluate students’ comprehension, critical and analytical thinking abilities, and use of knowledge in practical settings. In order to promote more objective and application-based questions, the weight assigned to short- and long-answer questions has been decreased. This should ease the burden of memorization and promote the usage of more practical and helpful apps. This is expected to make memorizing less difficult and encourage a more practical, hands-on approach to learning.

As per the new assessment practices for Class 10, 50% of the total questions will be competency-based in the form of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), case studies, source-based integrated questions, or any other type. The weightage for such questions in the last academic session was 40%. The objective section now includes MCQs with 20% weightage. The weightage for short-answer and long-answer questions has been reduced to 30%, which was 40% last year.

Similarly, for Class 12, the weightage of the objective type questions has been increased from 20% to 30%, while the weightage of short-answer and long-answer questions has been reduced from 60% to 50%. The weightage of case study-based questions has been increased from 20% to 20-30%, and the weightage of competency-based questions has been increased from 10% to 20%.

However, it should be noted that these changes are likely to be limited to the 2023-24 academic session only, as the board exams are expected to be reformed next year with the introduction of the new National Curriculum Framework (NCF). The NCF is expected to bring significant changes to the education system, including the syllabus, curriculum, and assessment practices, in line with the NEP 2020
