The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has recently made an important announcement regarding the conduct of improvement exams in July 2023. These exams, previously known as compartment exams, are intended for students who have been unable to pass one or two subjects in their CBSE board exams. While the official dates of the examination are yet to be announced, this article aims to provide you with an overview of the upcoming supplementary exams and the registration process.

Traditionally, CBSE has been conducting compartment exams for students who have failed in one or two subjects after the declaration of board exam results. However, based on recommendations made in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, CBSE has decided to change the nomenclature of these exams from “compartment” to “supplementary” exams.

The purpose of the supplementary exams remains the same: to provide an opportunity for students to improve their performance in specific subjects. For Class 10 students, the supplementary exam allows them to enhance their scores in two subjects. On the other hand, Class 12 students will have the chance to improve their scores in one subject only.

According to the CBSE guidelines, a candidate failing in one or two subjects of external examination shall be placed in compartment in those subjects provided he/she fulfills the eligibility criteria. Candidates can apply for CBSE compartment exams only in one or two subjects in which they are placed in the compartment Students who have appeared in Class 10th exam and are placed in EIOP (Eligible for Improvement of Performance) category will be eligible for the exam. Regular students can apply for compartment exams with the help of their CBSE-affiliated schools, whereas private students can apply online

According to recent data, it is estimated that over 1 lakh students will be appearing for the Class 12 supplementary examination this year. This highlights the importance of these exams in giving students another chance to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in subjects they may have struggled with previously

If you are a student who wishes to appear for the supplementary exam, it is crucial to stay updated on the registration process. While the official announcement regarding registration is yet to be made, sources suggest that the registration window will open in June 2023.
