A total number of 18,72,343 candidates had registered this year for NEET UG 2022, highest number of registration compared to previous years. Of which, 17,64,571 had appeared. 9,93,069 candidates qualified for the NEET 2022 exam taking the overall percentage to 56.27%

The Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar, informed Parliament of rising vacant seats in NEET- UG. The minister shared that 83,275 NEET-UG seats were left vacant in 2020, 92,065 in 2021 and 96,077 in 2022.

Candidates are given medical seats based on merit and according to the selections they make using an online counseling software. The entire allocation procedure is done online.

There have been some issues and concerns raised about the NEET admission process in India. Some of the common problems include:

  • Lack of uniformity in admission criteria: Different states and colleges have different admission criteria which can cause confusion and make the process complex for students.
  • Technical glitches in the online admission process: The online admission process for NEET UG has faced technical issues in the past, leading to inconvenience for students.
  • Limited seats in government colleges: The number of seats available in government medical colleges is limited, and the competition is high. This can result in deserving students not getting admission to government colleges.
  • High fees in private colleges: Some private medical colleges charge high fees, which can be unaffordable for students from economically weaker sections
  • Lack of transparency: There have been concerns about the lack of transparency in the admission process, leading to malpractices like capitation fees and corruption.
  • Reservation policies: Reservation policies can be a double-edged sword as they aim to provide equal opportunities for all, but they can also lead to deserving candidates being denied admission due to the limited availability of seats.

  • 15% of the seats in the All India Quota are offered by all government colleges in India. Some persons choose not to report to the designated college for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Through state counseling, they will be able to attend a better college.
  • They simply filled out all the selections to see which they would receive even though they never sought that college.
  • They already had spots in AIIMS or a prestigious college thanks to state quotas but they only wanted to try out AIQ.
  • They were sad that it didn’t work out because they believed that AIQ may help them get into a better college.

  • As part of its initiative to prevent blocking of seats and avoid vacancies, the DGHS has proposed to start counselling for deemed medical colleges after state and central government seats are filled. Last year, counselling process for deemed colleges clashed with state governments’ schedule, leading to confusion. Several students blocked seats in both places, and later chose the better one, , leaving the other vacant. About 80% of seats remained vacant in deemed colleges after two rounds, which were later filled.
